Files can be select according to the shape & size of the work piece , the material it is made of will have to be considered while selecting the right file.

File Type :
According to the filing application , files are classified into the following categories.
i. MACHINIST Files : - for Stock removal & surface finish requirement on machined components.
ii. SAW Files :- for sharpening wood working saws, cutter blades, machetes & similar thin edges.
iii. RASP Files :- Used by pattern / cabinet makers on wood , leather & similar soft materials.
iv. MILL files :- Used for stock removal on soft metals.
v. SPECIAL FILES :- used for specific application / materials

LENGTH :
Files is measured exclusively of the tang from point to heel.

FILE Cuts :-

	Single Cut:- Mostly saw files are single cut and used for sharpening / edging applications.
	Double Cut :- Give smooth surface finish and need less effort for filing.
	Bastard Cut :- Gives coarse finish & used for stock removal.
	Second Cut :- Gives medium to coarse finish & used for stock removal.
	Smooth Cut :- Gives smooth surface finish.
	RASP Cut :- Mostly RASP Files used for soft material viz. wood , leather.
